Accomplishment

The fifth and final letter in the PERMA model (Seligman, 2012) is A, for “Accomplishment. “This aspect of PERMA also embodies “Achievement”, which is often used describe this element. The dimension of accomplishment/achievement is linked to working toward and reaching goals, having the motivation to pursue these goals and tasks.

Accomplishments made through intrinsic motivation and the pursuit of improvement are more likely to lead to flourishing and a sense of well-being when compared to extrinsically-motivated goals There is nothing quite like the feeling of accomplishing a goal that you have set for yourself!

Here are some ways in which you can develop accomplishment:

  1. Set sub goals: create a series of smaller goals that will lead up to the larger goal. This way, you stay motivated while also moving toward the bigger achievement.

  2. Make goals ‘SMART’: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time specific

  3. Adopt a growth mindset: Remember that mistakes are a part of the learning process, and that ‘failures’ are learning opportunities rather than reasons to quit. The growth mindset teaches us to remain resilient and persevere through obstacles that get in the way of our goals.
